Six Degrees of Dallas

SPECIAL RULES [from now on]:

1. One-time guest appearances and cameos on TV shows other than Dallas do not count. Recurring or frequent guest roles are fine.

VALID: "John Larroquette made a guest appearance on Dallas" Yes, he did.

VALID: "Harry Anderson was a frequent guest star on Cheers with Ted Danson" Yes, he was.

VALID: "Michelle Forbes was a frequent guest star on Star Trek: Nextgen with Brent Spiner" Yes, many times.

INVALID: "Beth Toussaint made a guest appearance on Star Trek: Nextgen with Brent Spiner" True, but this was a one-time thing.

INVALID: "Charlene Tilton was a guest host on Saturday Night Live" Yes, but she had nothing else to do with the show. This is too far a reach.

2. Guest appearances and cameos in movies do not count. Only starring or significant semi-starring roles may be used.

VALID: "Ed O'Neill was in Little Giants with Rick Moranis" No argument here.

INVALID: "Ed O'Neill was in Wayne's World with Dana Carvey" Sure he was, but only for 45 seconds.

VALID: "Robert De Niro was in Midnight Run with John Ashton" Good link!

INVALID: "Robert De Niro was in What's Eating Gilbert Grape with Johnny Depp" Sorry. De Niro's part was so small he was actually unbilled.

3. For long-running TV shows: the two people that are being linked must have been on the show at the same time. Otherwise, you'll need an extra link. Same thing when you're dealing with spin-offs.

VALID: "Janet Jackson was on Diff'rent Strokes with Gary Coleman" You bet she was.

INVALID: "Janet Jackson was on Diff'rent Strokes with Dixie Carter" Sorry. Dixie Carter was on the show several years after Janet left.

VALID: "Janet Jackson was on Diff'rent Strokes with Gary Coleman"
"Gary Coleman was on Diff'rent Strokes with Dixie Carter"
Both statements are true.

VALID: "Bill Cosby played Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show"
"Lisa Bonet was on A Different World, which was a spin-off of the Cosby Show"

4. The lone exception to the rule that there must be three 'entities' in a relationship is familial relationships, which must be immediate. Siblings, parents, grandparents, children, and grandchildren relationships are one step. In-laws, cousins, nieces, uncles, etc, are two steps at least.

VALID: "Kim Basinger is married to Alec Baldwin."

INVALID: "Kim Basinger is the sister-in-law of Billy Baldwin."

VALID: "Kim Basinger is married to Alec Baldwin."
"Alec Baldwin and Billy Baldwin are brothers."
