Best Couple:
- Pam and Bobby
- JR and Sue Ellen
- Jock and Ellie
- Bobby and April
- Bobby and Jenna
- Ray and Donna
- JR and Mandy
This was another one where it looked like it would be over early, in favor of JR and Sue Ellen, but Pam and Bobby got a lot of votes mid-way through the survey and took a commanding lead. There were lots of random votes here and in all the remaining categories. Given the popularity of Bobby and Pam, I was surprised to see Bobby's other relationships get so many votes.
Worst Couple:
- Ray and Jenna
- JR and Cally
- Cliff and Jamie
- James and Michelle
- Ray and Donna
- Lucy and Mitch
- Bobby and April
- Bobby and Jenna
- Cliff and Afton
Lots of variety here, and this one came down to a single vote. I agree with all the selections except JR and Cally; while they weren't a very good couple, at least they weren't boring like the other three.
Best Couple that Never Happened:
- Bobby and Sue Ellen
- JR and Pam
- Bobby and Jenna
- James and Cally
- JR and Vanessa
- Clayton and Sue Ellen
- Bobby and April
- JR and Michelle
I don't think I was very clear with my intentions here; while most of you got the point, I got a few votes for Pam and Bobby, Bobby and April, etc., which is not quite what I intended. I suppose what people mean to say was that some couples could have had more interesting relationships if given the opportunity. Interestingly, one-third of these relationships involved Bobby. It's rather obvious that viewers feel bad that things never seemed to really work out for him.
Best Dressed:
- Pamela Barnes Ewing
- Sue Ellen Ewing Lockwood
- JR Ewing
A long way down: Angelica Nero, Bobby Ewing, Mandy Winger
A three-way battle for a long time which turned into a two-way fight. No one else was even close. Believe it or not, Pam won this by only a few votes. I'll reserve comment on Sue Ellen for later.
Worst Dressed:
- Ellie Ewing Farlow
- Lucy Ewing Cooper
- Sue Ellen Ewing Lockwood
- Angelica Nero
- Ray Krebbs
- Rose McKay
- Cliff Barnes
- Jenna Wade
Oh, you fickle Dallas fans! Voting Sue Ellen one of the best, and then one of the worst! How does this figure? Lucy and Angelica I heartily agree with. Miss Ellie's 'Sack Dresses 'R' Us' wardrobe has been a well-covered subject as well. But Sue Ellen? Come on.
Most Annoying Character:
- Lucy Ewing Cooper
- Cliff Barnes
- Jenna Wade Krebbs
- Pamela Barnes Ewing
- James Beaumont
- Charlie Wade
I think I understand this completely. Lucy was reasonably well ahead and deservedly so; but I can understand people remembering how Cliff would fly off the handle every few episodes and do something stupid and get into a lot of trouble and then have to get bailed out by somebody who cares for him even though he doesn't deserve it. And I remember well all of the times that Pam would make life complicated for no reason, or go ballistic and hate everyone except Christopher just because John Ross wouldn't play nicely, or Cliff didn't something stupid, or she woke up on the wrong side of the bed. And Jenna was such a coy tease, to both Bobby and Jack Ewing, that I'm surprised she's not higher on the list, especially after settling for that half-breed Ray Krebbs. [KIDDING! about Ray]
Most Useless Character (contributes nothing to the show):
- Lucy Ewing Cooper
- James Beaumont
- Stephanie Rogers
- Jenna Wade
- Jamie Ewing Barnes
I don't think any comment is necessary. And for those who are wondering, yes, this was a landslide victory. Lucy had more votes than every one else combined. Those who have only started watching the show recently might question this, because Lucy is actually quite active in the plots in the early going. All that I can say is to give her a while and you'll learn to dread Lucy storylines too.
Best Storyline:
- Who shot JR?
- The battle for Ewing Oil after Jock's death
- Pam and Bobby reuniting after their divorce
- The BD Calhoun saga
- Katherine Wentworth stalking Bobby
- The Asian Oil Wells saga [including the mortgaging of Southfork]
- Jock's death and its aftermath
- JR and Sue Ellen's custody battles for John Ross
- Bobby and JR lose Ewing Oil
Because of the variability of the answers here, I had to exercise some 'pollmaster's judgment'. Many of the responses were different but were actually the same thing: for instance, one response was 'JR trying to force Clayton to kick Sue Ellen off the Southern Cross'. Another was 'JR trying to get John Ross back from Sue Ellen'. You get the idea. Even though the responses point to different aspects of the same storyline, I lumped them together to keep the data from getting unwieldy. There were also a lot of votes for much of the 'window dressing' for Who Shot JR? including the deal with the Asian oil wells that almost went sour. The battle for Ewing Oil was an easy 2nd place.
Worst Storyline:
- Pam's dream
- The Angelica Nero saga
- Anything with Lucy
- JR in the asylum
- Sue Ellen's movie
- The range war
- The Wes Parmalee intrigue
Again I had to use some pollmaster's judgment. There were many votes which said 'Marinos Shipping' and 'the Angelica story', so I've lumped them together. Many people voted for 'the dream season', into which the Angelica saga falls, so I'm not sure whether this is what they meant. Any references to 'the dream season' I classified as "Pam's dream".
Special note: Lest you think I'm being overly harsh on Lucy, I must say that this is one place where I did not have to use any judgment. The 'Anything with Lucy' vote represents the number of people who wrote just that. Any other specific references to Lucy were counted separately.
Best Season:
- 1979-80
- 1980-81
- 1981-82
The 79-80 season was highlighted by JR finding out that John Ross was his son and not Cliff's; Jock Ewing being put on trial for a thirty-year old murder, to which Digger Barnes made a deathbed confession for Miss Ellie's sake; and, of course, JR made dangerous deals to finance his Asian oil well deal which including mortgaging Southfork behind his parents' back and bilking the cartel members out of lots of money. This, along with JR's manipulations of the lives of all around him, led to his near-fatal shooting at the end of the season. And what a great season it was! I can't wait to see it all happen again in a few weeks!
The 80-81 season was highlighted by JR's recovery and the discovery of his assailant; friction between Bobby and JR over power at the office; Lucy marries Mitch and Donna marries Ray; friction between Jock and Ellie over Takapa; and Cliff Barnes finding a dead woman in the Southfork pool.
The 81-82 season featured the death of Jock Ewing; JR and Sue Ellen's divorce and her escape to the Southern Cross ranch; and Bobby retrieving Kristin's son Christopher from her boyfriend.
Worst Season:
- 1990-91
- 1989-90
- 1985-86
This was rather lopsided in favor of the top two, the final two seasons of Dallas. The 90-91 season, just completed, found April Stevens dead and Bobby on a hunt for the woman responsible; the sale of Ewing Oil, which falls into the hands of Lee Ann De La Vega, Michelle Stevens, and finally Cliff Barnes. In the end, JR Ewing is left all alone at Southfork with none of the legacy he hoped to have. After a glimpse of what life would have been like without him, he cradles a gun in his hand and fires a shot.
The 89-90 season featured the arrival of JR's long lost son James Beaumont; his marital strife with new bride Cally; the marriage of April and Bobby; and of course, JR's foray into a mental institution hoping to get a piece of his rival Weststar.
The 85-86 season was the infamous 'dream season' in which the Marinos Shipping saga unfolded, threatening the lives of several of the Ewings; Pam found Mark Graison again and was preparing their life together; and Ray and Donna decided to adopt. It ended when Pam found a man who looked just like Bobby in her shower.
Best Cliffhanger:
- Who shot JR? [79-80]
- The passing of Bobby Ewing [84-85]
- The fire at Southfork [82-83]
- Pam wakes up [85-86]
- Bobby is shot [83-84]
Well, duh. As was to be expected, this one was no contest. I'm glad to see that some people appreciated Bobby's death as a cliffhanger - it was a really well-done episode, in which the entire family comes together and everybody forgets about their differences for a while. The fire at Southfork was also very well done. I'm very ambivalent about the dream season. I supposed I can say one good thing about it: it heralded the return of Patrick Duffy. I shudder to think what would have happened to Dallas had he not come back, especially after the defections of Victoria Principal and Linda Gray.
Worst Cliffhanger:
- Sue Ellen's Movie [88-89]
- Pam wakes up [85-86]
- JR in the sanitarium [89-90]
- It's a wonderful Dallas [90-91]
- Cliff's suicide attempt [81-82]
This one wasn't a landslide, which perturbs me. The episode that they trotted out in '89 and called a cliffhanger - that was pathetic! It was worse than most regular episodes. One of the hallmarks of every cliffhanger episode is that someone's physical well-being is threatened - except this one! [No, I haven't forgotten that Cliff got knocked out and robbed by Afton's new husband. But that doesn't count.] This could have been a whole lot better.
I've said enough about the dream season. I think the other two cliffhangers received votes because of the slow degeneration of the show's quality. I found myself getting really bored during the first half of the final episode - enough about Gary, already!
